Are you looking for a challenging yet rewarding hike with experienced local guide just outside Reykjavik area? Look no further than the Búrfellsgjá and Helgafell round hike! This 8 Kilometer (5 mile) loop takes you through some of the most beautiful scenes.

The hike starts at the Kaldárbotnar parking lot and follows a track to the Búrfellsgjá canyon. The canyon is stunning, with towering rock formations and a narrow gorge that cuts through the lava rock. From the gorge there is a short climb to the crater rim of Búrfell. The trail descends to Valahnjúkar, visiting a small lava cave called Músahellir (Mousecave). The final section of the hike takes you to the summit of Helgafell, a 338-meter (1100-foot) hill with stunning views of the Reykjavík metropolitan area and surrounding areas and mountains.

  • The hike will demonstrate various lava formations; Búrfellsgjá has a crater similar to the craters in the Reykjanes eruptions, just 700 years older. Helgafell was created under icecap 17000 years ago, and the rock formations differ significantly.
